Democracy has to deliver: Interview with Tamara Ehs

The magazine Arbeit & Wirtschaft published an interview with political scientist and AIA NRW Fellow Tamara Ehs, in which she analyzes the current crisis of democracy in Austria. According to Ehs, many people feel that they are not represented politically, and some even entertain the idea of a “friendly dictator.” Democracy must therefore deliver on its promises of freedom and equality in tangible ways—for example, through affordable housing, social security, and genuine co-determination.

Ehs emphasizes that growing inequality and political inaction are eroding trust. What is needed, she says, are new social narratives, citizens’ councils, and greater co-determination in companies. Political parties should also address people from all walks of life more systematically, not just academics. Ultimately, democracy must become more crisis-proof, for example through a constitutional convention.

Her conclusion: democracy must not be reduced to elections alone—it must deliver in order to withstand authoritarian temptations.
