Event Report: Minority counter-politics between everyday survival and populist geo-politics

What role do cities play in regulating migration, and how can migrants counter-act discrimination? Researcher Philipp Lottholz from Marburg University presented case studies from Duisburg and Plovdiv (Bulgaria), where groups of disenfranchised migrants self-organise by demonstrating, establishing small-scale charity projects and drawing attention to unequal conditions. The talk addressed how precarious living and working conditions both in Bulgaria and in Duisburg have sparked new forms of resistance, for instance against lack of access to sanitation and forced evictions by city authorities. The research points to larger-scale challenges within the EU social welfare regime that need to be addressed in cities where most migrants live.
