Many may have heard of the Crimean Tatar ethnic group, but the rich culture and history of the Crimean Tatars is little known. AIA Fellow Hüseyin Cicek was involved as an author in the publication of an anthology on the history and culture of the Crimean Tatars, which was recently published by Mieste Hotopp-Riecke and Sarah Reinke under the title “Die Krimtataren. Geschichte – Kultur – Politik”, which was recently published by Mieste Hotopp-Riecke and Sarah Reinke. Together with Elnara Letova, they presented the book at the Academy of International Affairs.
There has never been a comprehensive account of Crimean Tatar history in German before. Beyond the daily news, this book aims to help fill this gap. It is a joint effort by a network of many authors and an editorial team, some of whom had to flee Crimea twice, first to mainland Ukraine and then on to the European Union. During the book presentation, an overview of the human rights situation in Crimea was given and the online documentation of the Society for Threatened Peoples accompanying the book was also shown. The aim of the editors and authors is to highlight the cultural diversity of the Crimean Tatar heritage and to raise awareness of the challenges facing this endangered people.
