Cécile Pelaudeix
It is time for a Northern-European-Canadian Community
In her article, Cécile Pelaudeix argues that the Arctic is entering a new geopolitical era marked by growing great-power competition, security concerns, and shifting international alliances. She highlights China's increasing presence in the region through initiatives such as the Polar Silk Road, alongside Russia's continued strategic influence.
According to Pelaudeix, existing institutions, particularly the Arctic Council, are no longer equipped to address the region's evolving challenges. She therefore proposes the creation of a Northern-European-Canadian Community, bringing together Nordic and Baltic countries, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
The proposed framework would strengthen cooperation on security, economic resilience, and democratic governance while recognizing the close links between Arctic and Baltic affairs.
