On Tuesday, 20 October 2026, the Academy took its fellows on a tour of the Chancellor’s Bungalow. In addition to fostering scholarly networking and providing academic support, the Academy’s fellowship programme also aims to introduce our international guests to the culture and history of Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia and the Federal Republic of Germany.
The Chancellor’s Bungalow in Bonn offers a direct insight into the political history of the Federal Republic of Germany and the development of its democratic institutions since 1964. As the former residence and reception venue for the Federal Chancellors, it illustrates how political representation, diplomatic encounters and informal decision-making processes were spatially organised, and the significance architecture has had for the self-image of German democracy. The tour provided a vivid introduction to Germany’s post-war history and, at the same time, opened up avenues for international exchange on political culture, democratic values and diplomatic relations. Many thanks to the Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschlands Foundation and our guide Tobias Haßdenteufel for the fascinating and vivid presentation.
