The EU’s new Green Deal has raised several research questions and generated vast expectations on the way Europe seeks to change towards a more sustainable path, both at an international and regional level.

One can be fascinated by the enormous burden the EU has put on itself to become the forerunner of promoting measures for a climate neutral continent – beyond the practical implications, the symbolic value of such a promise should not be underestimated, however critical we are in our view on the EU. As a continent that has significantly contributed to causing the climate crisis, this step is at least an indication of a growing awareness that the climate crisis needs to be adressed systematically and as a cooperative endeavour.

These topics were the focus of a webinar hosted by former AIA Fellow Ana Stoddart in cooperation with the Alumniportal Deutschland, a cooperation project of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Goethe-Institut. The panel discussion “Is EU’s Green Deal leading the future of Global Agriculture Trade?” brought together an array of voices in both the public and private sectors to gain impartial and substantive information about EU’s new Green Deal and its impacts throughout the world. It focussed on the aspects and complexities of the new EU framework on its trade relations with third countries, with a special focus on its implications on exporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the Global South. The event was attended by more than 40 participants, including the Argentinian Ambassador to Germany Fernando Brun.
