The Indo-Pacific region, which is strategically characterized above all by the latent conflict between the USA and China, has become increasingly important for Europe, and therefore also for Germany. The East and Southeast Asian states, such as Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Singapore, as well as India, are important economic and security policy partners, and Sino-German relations are also constantly being negotiated.

These geostrategic power shifts are also important in NRW. For example, the question of whether a de-risking strategy towards China can be successful – or even sensible. Strengthening relations with other regional states (such as the ASEAN states) can open up alternatives, which were initiated with the ASEAN-NRW Summit. The growth regions in Southeast Asia, East Asia and South Asia, which are all part of the Indo-Pacific constellation, can become close partners for NRW.

In order to explore the opportunities and risks of greater involvement in the Indo-Pacific, the planned conference will focus on both larger geopolitical issues, including perspectives from the region, and in particular the possibility of cooperation with China.
